St Aidan’s is a brand new 700-place academy in Darlington specialising in Business and Enterprise. Offering extensive sports and performing arts facilities it also has a dedicated Faith Centre and Learning Resource Centre to encourage community use. Balfour Beatty carried out the £16.4m new build and Knauf AMF Ceilings
were selected to supply a range of performance ceilings to meet the varying needs of the new school building.
Around 2000m2 of Knauf AMF
’s Thermatex Acoustic dB41 ceiling
tiles were installed to the classrooms on the first floor. A high level of sound reduction was required in these areas to prevent rain noise from the metal decking on the roof above. Thermatex Acoustic is a smooth, elegant tile with a concealed acoustic
fleece and is available in a thickness of 24mm to combine high levels of sound absorption and attenuation.
For the ground floor classrooms, Knauf AMF
’s Ecomin Planet ceiling tiles were chosen. Made from a new generation of bio-soluble mineral wool, clay and starch they provide excellent fire resistance and acoustic
performance. In the corridors, 1000m2 of AMF Thermatex Alpha was installed to give a strong, white surface appearance with Class A sound absorption. Thermatex Alpha was also selected for the theatre where the black colour option was utilised.
Jumbo Projects Ltd carried out the ceiling installations at St Aidan’s Academy and were delighted to be using Knauf AMF
products. “We work with Knauf AMF
products on a lot of projects and always find them very easy to handle and install. They offer good quality, performance ceilings at a reasonable cost, which makes them a good choice for school buildings”, commented Adam Yates, Quantity Surveyor for Jumbo.
