Energy Efficient Homes from Alumasc
Market leading façade specialist Alumasc has worked in partnership with St Albans City & District Council by supplying a high performance insulated render system to an energy efficient housing refurbishment scheme in Hertfordshire.
Alumasc’s BBA certified Swisslab system was chosen for the project at Marford Road, Wheathampstead due to its superior quality and the outstanding level of technical support service offered by Alumasc. Swisslab external wall insulation (EWI) provides a weatherproof envelope which regularly carries thermal efficiency beyond current Building Regulation requirements, eliminating internal condensation and rainwater penetration while significantly reducing heating costs and carbon emissions.
The EWI system, produced at Alumasc’s ISO14001:2004 controlled UK production facilities, formed part of an overall package of sustainable building products used to remodel Marford Road in conjunction with the Building Research Establishment and Energy Savings Trust. St Albans City and District Council have subjected the properties to a number of ‘before and after’ tests including air-tightness and thermal imaging, to measure the improvements since work was carried out.
The Swisslab system selected for the project comprised a polymer modified base render and a lightweight ST Silkolitt silicone top coat, applied over phenolic foam insulation boards, achieving a U value of 0.30W/m²K. The through-colour silicone render was a key part the specification providing a durable finish which reduces the need for future painting.
The result is a highly attractive development of refurbished homes which will continue to provide essential social housing for decades to come – The fully warranted Swisslab system is estimated to increase a building’s life expectancy by a minimum of 30 years.
The Alumasc Approved installer was Lawtech Limited of Rochester and the main contractor was Surecast Ltd of Waltham Cross.
