Elta fans provide smoke extraction in sweet waters.

Ninety two SmokeVent axial flow fans manufactured by Kingswinford-based Elta Fans Building Services Division in the West Midlands have been installed in a prestigious retail development in South Africa. Anticipation is mounting with the imminent completion of the new Galleria Shopping Centre (83,000m2) in Amanzimtoti, a coastal town just south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to local legend, when the Zulu king Shaka led his army down the south coast in 1828, he rested on the banks of a river. When drinking the water, he exclaimed "Kanti amanzi mtoti" – Zulu for "So, the water is sweet". The river - and subsequently the town - came to be known as Amanzimtoti ("Sweet Waters").

The Elta Fans’ contract for the new Galleria Shopping Centre was to supply: thirty two SmokeVent 900mm models with 7.5kw motors; fifty two 1,000mm models with 7.5kw motors; and eight 1,000mm models with 11kw motors. The SmokeVent range has been specifically developed for emergency smoke spill extract systems to operate as part of the main extraction system or for emergency clearance to overcome hazardous fire, smoke or fume conditions. The order was placed by Robertson Ventilation Industries (RVI) with Elta Fans’ distributor, Air Movement Supplies of Durban, South Africa in January earlier this year. The fans were then manufactured in Kingswinford in the UK, shipped over to South Africa and delivered in two consignments in April and May. Installation is already complete and the Galleria Shopping Centre is on schedule.

The new mall, south of Durban on the N2 freeway and approximately 11 km from the city’s airport, is part of the Arbour Town development, a Keystone Investments development project estimated at ZAR 1.5 billion. The finished site will be a mixed-use development of 200,000m2 including The Galleria (regional shopping centre 75,000m2), Arbour Crossing (‘value’ retail centre 45,000m2), offices (35,000m2) and a housing development (530 residential units).

The letting list for The Galleria includes many of the South African national tenants, including Woolworths and Checkers, as well as the Foschini, Truworths, Mr. Price and the Edcon groups. It will also feature an ice skating rink, a miniature indoor golf course, several cinemas, sea-view restaurants and flagship stores for some of the major retailers along with 260 covered parking bays.

Amanzimtoti or 'Toti as it is commonly referred to by locals, is somewhat of a dormitory town for the nearby flourishing industrial area of Prospecton. Renowned for its warm weather and its beaches, it is a popular tourist destination, particularly with surfers, and the annual sardine run attracts many to the beaches. Now, with the launch of The Galleria, the beach-front Water World and Fun Land, Amanzimtoti is proving to be the destination of choice in South Africa.
