ECOPHON CEILINGS SUPPORT SIXTH FORM STUDIES

When the decision was taken to construct a new sixth form centre at a high performing school in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the local authority architects in charge of the design opted to utilise a variety of products from Ecophon to help ensure the building provided an acoustically comfortable and attractive environment for them to continue their studies.

The project at the 1000 pupil Hornsea Secondary School has seen Wright Construction erect a stand alone two storey structure under the guidance of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Architects Department, with CDY Ceilings being the specialist installer of the Ecophon Focus D, Gedina A and Gedina E tiles. The Focus Wing system was also employed in two rooms to break up large expanses of the tiles.

The Project Architect, Mr Nick Railer, comments: “This is a brand new building within the existing site, where we chose Ecophon ceilings systems throughout. We have specified Ecophon products in the past and have been more than satisfied with their quality and performance. The technical service and information that Ecophon has provided is very useful at detail design stage. Ecophon’s Technical Representative provides us with an NBS specification together with the acoustic information necessary to comply with the design guidelines for schools.”

Due to the unusual geometry of part of the building, Focus D, which is a non-visible grid system, was selected for both the Sixth Form Social area on the ground floor and the I.T. Room on the first floor. This was primarily to provide a flat non directional appearance and also for its acoustic properties. Additionally the Focus wing profile was incorporated to split these large areas into zones.

In the corridors – an area where reverberation can often cause considerable problems – the design team specified Gedina E. Then Gedina E 600 square tiles are to be found in all of the classrooms and toilets as well as stairwells and the main entrance lobby.
