DIMPLEX IS TO THE MANOR BORN
Dimplex’s stylish Valencia fire was selected to play a starring role in an ambitious project recently featured in Channel 4’s Grand Designs programme.
The dream home has been built in the grounds of an Edwardian manor house in Devon owned by Peter and Christine Benjamin. They wanted to plan ahead for their retirement and built the appropriately named Garden House so they could have a smaller, contemporary, more manageable residence.
The design for the house was heavily influenced by architect Mies van der Rohe’s German Pavilion in Barcelona, built in 1929, shortly before he became Director of the Bauhaus. He was known for his use of steel and glass and his iconic Modernist Pavilion brilliantly combines open space with large areas of glazing to ‘float’ gracefully above the ground.
The Benjamins’ four-bedroom Garden House features spectacular floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on to a peaceful walled garden and was designed with labour-saving and convenience in mind. “Safety and simplicity will be the priorities for us as we enjoy our retirement,” said Peter.
The stylish Valencia fire is installed in a feature wall built as an ‘island’ in the centre of the sitting room. With plasma TVs and entertainment centre hidden inside sleek wooden cupboards built into the wall, the fire makes an impact as the highlight of this streamlined, modern room.
Dimplex’s industry-leading Optiflame® fire effect means that the owners can enjoy realistic flames without the chore of cleaning a solid fuel hearth or the aggravation of regular gas safety inspections.
“We chose the Valencia fire because it perfectly complements the modern style of the house. Installation could also have been a real problem because the wall is in the centre of the house. However, because the Valencia is electric it didn’t require a flue or chimney, making installation really easy,” explains Peter.
