Corner house benefits from Kingspan Kooltherm K12

Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board provided the ideal solution for architect Sam Stork during the construction of her own personal project – the £250k Corner House situated on the edge of the New Forest.  With a strong focus on materials and energy in use, the design meets the requirements for level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The wooden construction, which boasts a sedum roof, sits in a suburban street on the edge of Lymington amongst a mixture of 1950s council houses and 70s bungalows.  The design does not attempt to mirror the surrounding mixed styles, but uses timber cladding to refer back to the wider context of the New Forest National Park.

Sam Stork commented, “There were four main requirements for the wall insulation; its thermal conductivity, fire performance, green guide rating for the Code for Sustainable Homes and finally product durability.  Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board was the only product to achieve all four of these aims and we were happy that it was a product manufactured in the UK.

The house is designed along the basic principles of low carbon, energy efficient homes such that it is compact, well-insulated, airtight and a reasonable thermal mass.  The structure is a solid laminated timber frame and it was important to ensure a continuous layer of insulation over the structure without gaps in order to minimize thermal bridging. As the external timber cladding had to be fixed through the insulation very long nails were used for this, in order that no timber or structural members interrupted the insulated envelope.”

Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board has been designed specifically for use with timber frame and steel frame wall constructions.  It is ideal for both new build and refurbishment projects, and can be used between studs or as an insulating sheathing whilst providing a thermal conductivity as low as 0.020 W/m.K.

The Kingspan Kooltherm K-range comprises premium performance rigid thermoset insulation for roofs, walls and floors.  Its thermal conductivity (as low as 0.020 W/m.K) can help achieve excellent U-values even where space is at a premium.  Kooltherm is safe and easy to install producing no irritating fibres; and provides reliable long term thermal performance over the lifetime of the building.
