CELOTEX RAISES THE TEMPERATURE AT EXCLUSIVE COUNTRY CLUB

Following detailed planning, the extension of the Old Thorns Manor House in Liss, Hampshire, is transforming the popular country club. With the owners looking to provide a superb thermal envelope to keep heating costs down and take the lead on cutting the nation’s carbon emissions, a range of high performance insulation from leading producer Celotex was installed throughout the development.

A popular golfing, spa and getaway destination, the hotel is booked full almost every night of the year. With demand so high, managers at Old Thorns decided to build more than a hundred extra apartments and suites. Alongside this a new brasserie and pro shop are being added, as well as extensive dining facilities so that everyone who comes to test their mettle on the championship golf course can be sure of enjoying a few refreshments at the nineteenth hole.

Delivery of the scheme was unusual in so much that Old Thorns managed almost every element of the redevelopment themselves. This included setting up its own specialised contracting firm for the length of the sizeable project. Old Thorns engaged specialist contractors to deliver the especially complex elements of the projects, whilst its own operatives conducted much of the work, including the installation of Celotex’ leading polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation. A pleasant environment in which to work, operatives enjoyed working at Old Thorns. As it remained open during the project, many had the opportunity to hit the golf course!

The Celotex insulation was supplied by Travis Perkins, which has built an excellent working relationship with Celotex over the years. It was installed in both the roof and in the floors of the new wings that were added to the historic club.

Two thicknesses, 50mm and 100mm, of Celotex GA4000 were used on the build.

A cost effective, general purpose insulation board designed for use on floors, walls and roofs, it has excellent thermal qualities – far beyond those of mineral wools – making it the ideal products for use on the scheme in terms of both performance and value.

Celotex’ extensive range offers both the thickest and thinnest PIR boards available on the market, making them ideal for any application. The boards also have excellent qualities in sustainability. Alongside offering long lasting and high grade thermal performance, they hold low Global Warming Potential and zero Ozone Depletion Potential. This led to Celotex PIR insulation boards being the first to achieve an “A+” when compared to the BRE Green Guide 2008.

Celotex GA4000 of 100mm thickness was fitted in the floors of the new build sections of the club. Installed over a damp proof membrane and covered with a vapour control layer and substrate, it ensures that no heat will be lost to the ground. The 50mm boards were installed in the roof to create a thermally efficient envelope, guaranteeing that the prestigious country club will hold the warmth – ideal after a round of golf on a chilly day.

With work expected to continue at Old Thorns for a further year or more, operatives have plenty of time to enjoy the tranquil surroundings of the club. A major project, it has been helped on its way considerably with the support of Celotex’ technical staff and their cost effective – yet high performance – GA4000 insulation boards.
