CARDIFF ADMINISTRATION CENTRE BOASTS ECOPHON SUSPENDED CEILINGS

Extensive areas of suspended ceilings together with specialist feature products from the range of Ecophon have been employed in the refurbishment of offices belonging to one of Wales largest social housing providers.

Alexandra House in Cardiff accommodates the administrative headquarters of the Taff Housing Association and has been extensively refurbished by contractor, Tremlett & Griffiths with Davies Llewelyn & Jones being the architectural practice responsible for all of the design work and site supervision, the locally based practice choosing to make use of both Ecophon’s Gedina ceilings in combination with coffers including illuminated level changes, making for an attractive feature.

The Partner in Charge of the Project for Davies & Llewelyn Jones, Mr Wyn Jones, comments: “We opted to utilise Ecophon for this project because we required coffers as part of the system, though acoustic performance was also an important aspect to the specification.

“The two coffers have been installed within the boardroom which is actually a public area with a lot of conferences being staged there.” The linear level changes incorporating lighting are used in the main office areas and there is also a new ceiling in the reception area. Mr Jones continues, “The refurbishment contract has turned out very well.”

Ecophon coffers and illuminated level changes offer architects and interior designers the opportunity to break up large ceiling areas or to create visually dramatic soffits in a wide variety of environments: including hotels, restaurants, retail premises, call centres and even education establishments. In this instance the illuminated change of level sections served to conceal large volumes of mechanical and electrical service installations routed through a central walkway in the offices.

The manufacturer’s Technical Consultant involved with the project, Paul Lake, adds: “The project involved several challenges across different parts of the building, including the level of noise in the large open plan office area. We looked at the need to create a good acoustic environment for the large number of people working there and the requirement to introduce some feature lighting.

Main contractor, Tremlett & Griffith sub-contracted the installation of all the suspended ceilings and partitioning to Treborth Interiors as a specialist well experienced in fitting the Ecophon systems.
