Construction Specialties’ (C/S) Allway® Expansion Joint Covers have been installed at the new Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the 50,000 capacity venue built on the original Lansdowne Road Stadium site.
The original sporting venue was demolished to make way for the brand new multi-purpose event stadium. C/S Expansion Joint Covers were specified for the new stadium to accommodate the movement of the building (thermal and wind sway) without compromising its structural integrity. The installation was completed by the company’s in-house installation team, Conspec Contracts.
Sean Stagg, Contracts Manager at John Sisk & Son Ltd, said: “The type of building and its purpose as an entertainment venue means that the expansion joint covers had to meet high performance requirements and be suitably fire resistant. This was a technically demanding project, but the C/S Technical Department were able to address the unique challenges and develop a bespoke solution.
“C/S recommended Expansion Joint Covers for the project and their Conspec Contracts team installed the system, which was a real advantage, as we knew we could rely on skilled installers with an excellent knowledge of the product and its capabilities.” Internal levels of the building were fitted with the AL-200HD system, a heavy duty aluminium floor-to-floor cover for 50mm wide expansion joints. A moisture barrier and drainage system were installed underneath the expansion joint covers on the new access podium over the railway line which allows spectators to access the stadium at premiem seat level. Floor to wall versions of the AL-200HD system were also used in other areas. This high performance joint cover system can accommodate as much as 100mm of overall horizontal movement, significantly more than the 65mm required for the project. The C/S AL-200HD joint covers are designed to withstand heavy duty rolling loads and when combined with C/S moisture barriers, are resistant to water ingress. The specification in internal areas of the stadium also included C/S Reflex Fire Barrier and SM-200N wall joint covers. The fire barrier is an insulation layer that provides a minimum of two hours integrity in a fire, ensuring the complete solution met the requirements for fire resistance.
