Bilco supplies smoke ventilators for prestigious Sheffield residential development

Leading access doors and vents manufacturer, Bilco UK Ltd, has completed delivery of 13 smoke vents from its new REM range for the Anchor Point development in the Bramall Quarter of Sheffield.

Bilco has supplied six NB-50REM, five FW-50REM and two HW-50REM smoke ventilators, which are installed on the rooftops. Two of the smoke vents offer a clear vent area of 1m² and the rest offer a clear vent area of 1.5m².

The residential element of the development comprises a mix of 176 one and two bedroom apartments and 12 four bedroom townhouses grouped around a central landscaped forum. It also includes a new headquarters office for Sheffield-based timber merchant Arnold Laver, restaurants and take-away food stores within a fifth building.

Neighboring properties include the Bramall Lane stadium of Sheffield United Football Club - the oldest major stadium in the world still hosting professional football matches.

Three new buildings at Anchor Point have a smoke control system installed in case of fire. If smoke is detected the Bilco REM vents will automatically open above the various stairwells (including the fire escape stairwells) that provide access to the buildings.

These vents are operated by a fire control panel for opening and closing which is triggered by smoke detectors or by the alarm being raised. This fire control panel is housed in the main reception area. One bank operates A & B blocks while a separate bank controls C block. In addition, a separate manual control switch has been placed in a lockable riser cabinet near to the main control panel, to allow access onto the roof for routine inspection and maintenance.

Anchor Point has been designed by Robinson Engineering for award-winning Yorkshire developer Magellan Residential and is being built by main contractor North Midland Construction.

Alan Langstaff, Project Manager for North Midland Construction, said "Fire safety in multi-storey buildings in a development such as this is becoming increasingly important. This system prevents fire and smoke from enveloping the whole building, providing occupiers with clearer visibility to escape and helping the emergency services to fight the fire, if the need ever arose."

Bilco's REM vents were supplied to specialist contractor Advanced Roofing and Flooring which installed them as part of its roofing contract.

David Hartshorn of Advanced Roofing and Flooring said: "The Bilco REM hatches meet the key requirement of reliability in operation and also offer long life with easy maintenance and testing. They have also been swift and easy to install."

Simon Shand-Brown, sales and marketing manager for Bilco, said: "Bilco specialises in working with our clients to provide them with products that meet their needs.

"We were able to meet all the requirements for smoke ventilation at Anchor Point with our REM hatches which also provide access to roof areas for future maintenance work.

"We were delighted to work with Advanced Flooring and Roofing on this prestigious project in the heart of Sheffield which is contributing to the regeneration of this former industrial area as a lively and cosmopolitan area of residential and commercial development."

In addition to smoke vents, Bilco manufactures a range of pit and floor doors. Models include drainage doors, non-drainage doors, doors designed to receive flooring materials, doors for interior building applications, fire rated floor doors and a series of special application doors.
