B & K Structures wins innovative technology award

The UK’s battered economy hasn’t held back hybrid steel and engineered timber frame construction company B & K Structures (BKS) from broadening its horizons and the company has now been recognised for its product innovation with a prestigious award from the National Chamber of Commerce.

Awarded for creative use of new technologies, the East Midlands Award for Innovation Through Technology, sponsored by Dell, recognises the hard work undertaken by BKS to diversify its product range in response to the market’s demands.

Until 2006 BKS, formerly known as B & K Steelwork Fabrications Ltd, purely offered steelwork fabrication and construction. As a result of an enquiry from a blue chip client regarding the potential to create a timber / steel combined structure, BKS researched and developed an entirely new product line. Though the company still offers conventional steel construction in certain circumstances, the new timber and hybrid products have become the core of the business, with a growing turnover.

To support the new product ranges, BKS developed an innovative 3D modeling system, for which it received the Chamber of Commerce award.  Adapted from existing steel industry software, the system allows BKS to produce high-specification bespoke Glulam and Cross-Laminated Timber products and integrate them with other construction materials.

BKS comment: “We expanded our product range four years ago to meet the needs of the market place and we’ve worked hard to develop our modelling technology alongside this, in order to provide the best service we can.  It’s great to be recognised for our efforts to offer the widest possible variety of innovative, engineered and ultimately sustainable solutions.”

Neville Reyner, President of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “We’ve been delighted with the consistently high standard of confident companies out there that have been flying the flag for British business, despite the uncertain times we find ourselves in.  These strong businesses have demonstrated that they are thriving - and they’re doing this through innovation, hard work and determination to succeed at the highest level.”
