Tall Revolving Doors - LSQ Development, 30 Leicester Sq, London

Case study

DESIGN BRIEF / OVERVIEW

The LSQ development in Leicester Square is situated in a 1920s building that occupies the entire west side of Leicester Square in the centre of London’s entertainment district.

Work was completed last year on taking the historical building and redeveloping it to provide 90,000 ft2 of contemporary and innovative Grade A commercial space and over 40,000 ft2 of retail space. The façade was retained up to the fifth floor and a bronze anodised aluminium curtain walling system was installed.

Make Architects brought in Open Entrances to assist with the entrance into the double-height reception area, which features full-height bay windows and a sculptural ceiling with integrated LED lighting

SOLUTION:

We consulted with Make and with Multiplex, who have taken on this part of the development, to create an entrance that was consistent with the bronze curtain walling and architectural features. This consisted of a very tall revolving door, which is a unique and commanding visual feature, and internal partitioning speed gates. All of this was constructed with toughened, laminated glass sections and anodised aluminium bronze framework that is entirely consistent and visually identical to the bronze finish specified throughout the development.

The work on the revolving door was complicated slightly with the design of a light and air curtain above the door, which demanded that we engineer an entirely unique solution that is visually unobtrusive but in practical terms entirely effective.
