Structual design in American Hardwoods – a new publication

“Engineers learn from their work on projects. The knowledge they gain is often disseminated in papers but it is unusual that one project should directly stimulate further testing and the publication of a reference work, which improved the utilisation of a whole range of products.” So says Richard Harris of Buro Happold in the foreword to this groundbreaking publication.

Four American hardwood species – white oak, red oak, tulipwood and ash – were independently tested by Building Research Establishment (BRE), and this technical detail along with case studies of current projects demonstrating structural use of American hardwoods have been combined to create this specialist publication written by Andrew Lawrence and Peter Ross* of Arup. The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) teamed up with Arup and commissioned BRE to undertake testing to determine their characteristic values for structural design. The publication includes the environmental credentials of American hardwoods, and provides information on Eurocodes and Standards, national design codes and Strength Classes and properties for the four species.

David Venables, AHEC’s European Director, said “We are now able to offer architects and engineers alike the technical information which they need to consider American hardwoods in structural design.”

AHEC produces a full range of technical publications which, including Structural Design in American Hardwoods, are available free of charge by visiting www.ahec-europe.org or faxing 020 7626 4222.
