Shade sails – providing shelter for all

Case study

The Shade Sail continues to be one of the most versatile products on the market for adding shade and shelter. Based on the same principle as a ship’s sail, these tensile structures can provide much needed shade from UV rays, or wet weather.

Available in shade cloth or waterproof PVC, with multiple design options and colour choices for the fabric as well as the steelwork, A&S Landscape can create a bespoke solution for you.

Available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, shadesails are tensioned using a stainless steel turnbuckle or a pulley system, which is fixed at each corner of the fabric.

Depending on whether your sail is permanently fixed or used occasionally, you can consider different fixings. The turnbuckle allows for greater tension to be applied, whereas a pulley system might be more practical if the shade sail will be taken down regularly. Something that can be considered at design stage.

Posts are designed and installed to cope with the required tension as well as increases in load generated by gusts of wind and other weather.

Multiple sails are becoming more and more popular because they create large areas and offer a striking design.

A&S Landscape work across all sectors, creating and installing shade sail canopies for many uses;

Colleges install multiple shade sail canopies to create social spaces for students. Hospitals and care homes install shade sails to create outdoor seating areas. Garden centres create shaded areas for outdoor dining. Schools create outdoor learning areas as well as play spaces for younger children.

Example of projects that A&S Landscape have installed recently include –

Chobham Adventure Farm added multiple shade sails to provide shelter for younger visitors using the sandpits, as well as a modern covered dining area for parents and carers. Multiple shade sails created a large covered area as well as making a design feature of the new space.

Shipley College added fabric shade sail canopies alongside one of their greenhouses, where students and visitors alike can enjoy the greenhouse area, whatever the weather. The overlapping sails have created a welcoming seating area which is sheltered from the rain by the PVC fabric.

Jack Hunt School added a stylish fabric shade sail in sky blue, which has created plenty of space for students to enjoy an al fresco lunch.

Whatever kind of project you are working on there is sure to be a shade sail solution to fit. To see examples of nearly 1000 canopies installed by A&S Landscape please visit our gallery.
