Rural road improvements in Cumbria

Case study

Specifying Hanson’s Countyfalt to complete the carriageway works provided Cumbria County Council with a surfacing material that offers increased strength and durability.

Historically these schemes would have been completed using an AC20 binder overlay, which would have been surface dressed the following year. By using Countyfalt – a one layer application – at depths of between 60mm and 80mm, Hanson Contracting provided a material that removed the need for additional surface dressing, saving time.

The majority of the schemes were in rural locations and the existing road surface was very poor and badly affected by water run-off.

Countyfalt is ideally suited to rural roads where a low textured and deformation resistant single layer/binder course treatment is required.

It provides a long term, cost effective solution to any application where a binder course has been traditionally used as a surface course and subsequently surface dressed, or where a binder course is surfaced after a period of trafficking.

Benefits of Countyfalt

• Cost-effective

• Prevents water ingress

• High deformation resistance

• Durable
