Moray Council's Schools and Office Projects Elgin Scotland

Case study

Rockfon, the UK ceiling systems division of Rockwool International, is currently enjoying substantial growth in the Scottish market. Working closely with Linear Projects of Glasgow, a Rockfon Active Installer, Rockfon has provided a wide selection of acoustic ceiling and wall solutions to a trio of new developments in the region.

The Moray Council has recently invested £4m in converting a dilapidated supermarket in Elgin High Street into smart new offices for it’s staff, with centralised services for the community. The building has been designed for energy efficiency, utilising new rooflights and directional air vents and drawing on thermal mass principles to help reduce running costs.

Accommodating up to 220 staff and visitors, the open-plan offices were completed with Rockfon Eclipse ceiling islands, suspended underneath the exposed concrete soffits throughout the main office areas, and Rockfon Sonar Activity tiles directly fixed to the bulkheads in order to provide the necessary acoustic control.

The Moray Council also specified compliance with Building Bulletin 93 for two new build PPP projects - Elgin Academy and Keith Primary School. Both have now been completed with an extensive range of Rockfon products, including traditional suspended ceilings and wall absorbers, to meet varying requirements for acoustic control, aesthetics and impact resistance.

In each school, Rockfon’s Alaska and Koral ceiling tiles have been used throughout the main circulation zones and classrooms to deliver high class performance. A particular feature of both new buildings is a large central space for assemblies, performances and dining, the design of which meant suspended ceilings were not feasible. Instead, Rockfon Scholar wall absorbers were chosen as they can be directly fixed to the walls to provide an attractive surface with medium impact resistance and good sound absorption.

For the new sports halls, Rockfon Samson wall absorbers were used as they offer excellent impact resistance and high sound absorption, being specifically designed for use in sports activity areas.

A higher level of sound insulation for controlling unwanted noise from room to room was needed for the music and drama rooms at Elgin Academy, so Rockfon Alaska dB40 tiles were installed to these areas. It provides enhanced sound insulation as well as a high level of sound absorption, with a smooth matt white surface.

Rockfon’s wide portfolio of products allowed us to offer different solutions for every space in each project,” explained Stephen Holmes, MD at Linear Projects. “This meant we could source everything from a single supplier, helping to save time and costs, whilst still meeting all the requirements of each project.”
