Litter Bins And Storage, Stonehenge Visitor Centre

2 Nov 2018
Case study

The prehistoric stone monument at Stonehenge in Wiltshire is one of the world’s most important and best-known historic sites, holding official World Heritage site status. The site is managed by English Heritage, who opened the new £27 million Visitor Centre in December 2013. Woodscape were commissioned to provide bespoke hardwood litter bins and other wooden receptacles to integrate into the natural landscaping.

The Stonehenge Visitor Centre provides a range of facilities for the monument’s million-plus visitors a year. It also tells the story of the famous standing stones through an exhibition featuring internationally important prehistoric objects. This radical new addition to the site makes it an even more popular destination for visitors who often choose to spend a whole day in the area – so efficient litter disposal is essential.

The project was extremely important for the sensitive historic site. Denton Corker Marshall Architects designed the building to sit gently in the landscape, with minimal impact on its surroundings. Its wood, steel, zinc and glass construction, along with the gentle wave of the roof canopy, were designed to complement the natural setting by resembling trees and therefore connect with the solid integrity of the stones.

Woodscape are very proud to have been selected to design and manufacture bespoke Square Litter Bins for the Stonehenge Visitor Centre, helping to maintain the cleanliness and quality of environment. These Naturally Very Durable Hardwood bins have lockable compartments with single and double-hinged stainless steel lids and were furnished with metal lettering to help users separate their litter for recycling.

Woodscape also designed and manufactured matching hardwood Grit Bins with stainless steel handles and smart wifi storage – essential modern technology provided by the centre in order to guide visitors around the site. All products were finished to the same high quality, bringing continuity to the scheme’s design.
