Kebony completes its first UK residential project

1 Aug 2011
Case study

Kebony, the award-winning sustainable substitute for tropical hardwood and preservative treated timber is delighted to unveil its first UK residential project at 25 Hurst Avenue, a stunning new property in the heart of London’s prestigious Highgate. This innovative wood material is fast becoming the material of choice for leading architects and developers.

The property, consisting of two 4,000 sq ft family homes, was designed by creative new developers Bliss who chose Kebony for its outstanding performance qualities and unrivalled green credentials. Designed for inspirational and open living, the mirrored layout draws on that of a Moroccan riad bringing the outside ‘in’ through sliding glass walls with spectacular open views from its picturesque elevated position and a separate garden lodge that adds to the substantial living space.

Kebony has been used throughout for the exterior cladding, extensive outdoor decking and garden furnishings such as the post box, garden gates and refuse bin stores. The intrinsic properties of this new wood material make it an attractive choice to developers and architects – a beautiful material that is non-toxic, maintenance-free, durable and aesthetically-pleasing.

Sustainably focused construction methods were used in the build and Kebony was used in conjunction with a number of other cutting-edge materials, including the KLH cross-laminated timber panels that form the main sustainable wood structure of the build whose frame intrinsically stores carbon.

In an impressive feat of engineering, the main superstructure of the development took six men just six days to build a modern masterpiece with minimal space, noise and disruption to the local community - see http://blissspace.co.uk/latest.html for a video showing the fascinating construction process.

Commenting on the project, Jan Terje Nielsen, Director of Marketing for Kebony says: “We are delighted to work so closely with Bliss on such a forward-thinking project as 25 Hurst Avenue. We are very proud to contribute not only to a property that has such superb design and aesthetic credentials, but one that is so ground-breaking on an environmental level.”

Daniel Broch, Founder of Bliss comments: “Our design ethos and aspirations drive our thinking where we are determined to provide elegant, contemporary spaces fit for 21st century living; 25 Hurst Avenue reflects our thinking perfectly.”

Architects, contractors and developers alike are increasingly integrating eco-friendly products and technologies into their projects. Kebony is one such company that offers a revolutionary wood product that can be used for decking, cladding, roofing, windows, indoor and outdoor furniture, yacht decking and other construction materials. Chosen for its durability, versatility and green credentials, Kebony is also aesthetically beautiful, with its natural colouring varying from the rustic modern-looking Scots Pine to the more traditional Southern Yellow Pine or Maple.

Kebony has received numerous environmental awards including the Nordic region’s eco-label, the Swan, the Glass Bear for sustainable consumption and production and, most recently, named as one of the world’s most promising clean technology companies in the Global Cleantech 100 in competition with more than 3 000 companies from 50 countries. Kebony has a minimal carbon footprint, producing just 10% of the CO2 emissions of the production of Brazilian Clear Fell Ipê.
