Giants Causeway Visitor Centre, Northern Ireland

27 Mar 2014
Case study

The Giant’s Causeway’s new Visitor Centre is an architecturally stunning and sustainable building, BREEAM rated ‘Excellent’, thanks to a number of strategies; including a water conservation and recovery system that features pipework and cisterns provided by Geberit.

In the building’s extensive bathrooms, Geberit Mapress Carbon pressed pipework and Geberit Mepla multi-layer pipework link to the water saving Geberit Duofix dual flush cisterns and sleek Geberit Sigma50 flush plates. The Geberit Duofix frames and cisterns are hidden in the wall help maintain a clean and aesthetically pleasing finish for this ultra-minimalist building. In the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre café, Geberit Mapress Stainless Steel is also used where pipework is exposed.

Attracting 500,000 to 700,000 visitors a year, the National Trust owned centre was built following a fire and the general need to expand. External renewable technologies were not conducive with the building’s minimalistic appearance so, in addition to water conservation, its’ sustainable credentials have been achieved through ventilation, high levels of thermal mass and a Ground Source Heat Pump.

The Giant’s Causeway brings together a number of Geberit’s plumbing solutions, chosen due to their longevity – a key consideration in such a sustainable building - quality and cost-effectiveness: not only are Geberit Mapress and Geberit Mepla price competitive products, their ease of installation minimises time on site, cutting man hours.
