Case study

F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Stopgap 100 Rapid ultra-fast smoothing underlayment and Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic flooring adhesive have been used to refurbish the ward corridors at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary to create a safe, level and hard-wearing floor surface for staff and visitors.

In hospital environments, an even surface is vital to ensure that medical equipment, such as monitoring devices and trolleys can be transported safely around the building, as well as protect patients, staff and visitors from trips and falls. To create a smooth, safe and level subfloor surface Stopgap 100 Rapid ultra-fast smoothing underlayment was installed at a thickness of 3 – 6mm throughout the ward corridors.

Stopgap 100 Rapid has been designed for heavy-duty environments, such as hospital ward corridors which are subjected to heavy traffic daily. Stopgap 100 is also low odour and protein free, making it suitable for use in biologically sensitive environments such as Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. What’s more, its excellent self-levelling properties and ultra-fast drying technology, which allows a floorcovering to be installed in as little as 90 minutes, make the product ideal for use in the ward corridors which needed to be re-opened quickly to cause minimal disruption to the hospital.

Following the removal of the old Flotex carpet and prior to installing the Stopgap 100, Dumfries based flooring contractors, A & H Floor Covering Specialists Ltd, removed any remaining adhesive residue and primed the subfloor with Stopgap P131. Stopgap P131 is a general purpose neoprene primer which prevents smoothing underlayments drying out too rapidly and promotes their adhesion to the subfloor.

A & H Floor Covering Specialists Ltd used Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive to adhere the Polyflor and Tarkett industrial vinyl floorcovering to the prepared subfloor. Protected against biodegradation, the solvent free adhesive has a strong initial tack and a high bond strength. Styccobond F46 can also be rolled with a paint roller following trowel application to minimise the effect of trowel serrations shadowing through the vinyl floorcovering for an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Roy Henderson, Managing Director at A & H Floor Covering Specialists Ltd, comments: “We always use F. Ball’s products as we know they are reliable and will complete the job to a safe and high standard, which is especially important in a hospital environment. With its high strength and rapid drying time, we knew Stopgap 100 and F46 would be the ideal products to get the job done quickly and effectively and cause minimal disruption to the busy hospital.”
