Cembrit’s B5 corrugated sheeting has been chosen as part of a unique design project to transform an old builder’s yard in East Dulwich into a contemporary family home. Christened by some as ‘the urban cowshed,’ The Yard is an innovative property which has been designed to the Passivhaus standard, an accreditation that recognises highly energy efficient buildings.
Featuring bedroom and workshop wings configured around a courtyard garden, as well as airy double-height living spaces, The Yard is in many ways similar to European homes in its design. The aesthetics of the property and the ambition of the project led to The Yard being filmed as part of the popular Channel 4 home improvement show, Grand Designs, hosted by designer Kevin McCloud.
The home uses B5 corrugated sheet as its outer skin. Traditionally used in non-residential applications, B5 is making inroads in the residential environment as fashions in architecture change. Fibre cement has several advantages over metal sheeting, such as it being rust resistant and not noisy in the rain. Cembrit B5 provided a perfectly scaled corrugated sheet for the roof and walls of The Yard, displaying a more modern and deeper profile than the typical 3 inch profile corrugated sheeting.
“When we acquired the land for our new build, one of our design objectives was to pay homage to the architectural history of the site” commented the homeowner, Tracy Fox. “We sought a roofing solution that was sturdy, weatherproof and aesthetically appealing. One of the most important considerations was a low maintenance roofing solution and thanks to Cembrit’s B5 corrugated sheet, we have been able to achieve this. The rust and rot free characteristics of these sheets make it an ideal choice for double height spaces.”
Cembrit B5 is available in 14 different lengths, ranging from 4' to 10' 6 and are approximately 40% wider than the older 3 inch profile design offering better coverage per sheet. The broader corrugations have a greater water carrying capacity than 3 inch profile and can consequently be used to a lower pitch and with smaller overlaps.
