Bowfell House Care Home benefits from a Polyflor flooring solution

The Knoll Care Partnership have recently opened the doors to Bowfell House, their latest care establishment in Urmston, Manchester. The new site has been purpose built to meet the demands of people with advanced care needs and a range of conditions, including dementia. The team at Bowfell House worked with Redroom Interiors to create a comfortable and safe environment, that would make residents feel at home.
With four cosy lounges to enjoy as well as a library, a parlour room and a games room, the huge site offers residents plenty of space to keep their days varied. If that wasn’t enough there is also an onsite bar, hair and beauty salon, activity room and 2 dining areas.
Whilst it was important to the team to create an interior designed to feel luxurious and comfortable, there were several additional requirements that needed to be considered including ease of maintenance, durability and safety. For the floors, Polyflor vinyl was specified across much of the site, except for the lounge spaces where carpet was specified for comfort.

Special consideration was given to ensure the design provided a dementia friendly environment. Creating spaces with high exposure to natural light, choosing colour palettes that inspired calmness and using contrasting colours and tones across the floor, the walls and the furniture, all helped in achieving this.

The 2 dining rooms feature floor to ceiling windows that offer panoramic views of the local area and flood the spaces with natural light. The interior consisted of modern and colourful furniture complemented by Polyflor Forest FX in Rustic Oak. The wood inspired design brings a sense of warmth to the space, whilst the 0.7mm wear layer and PUR surface treatment give it enhanced durability and ease maintenance, both essential properties for heavy use areas of this kind.

Similarly, Forest FX was specified for the bedrooms in Rural Deckwood and Oiled Oak, the wood tones complement the bright interior and again, bring warmth to the space. Each bedroom also has an ensuite wet room. Risk of slipping was heightened in this area and therefore Polysafe Quattro was specified in Granite Sky. The range is designed specifically for wet rooms, providing a high degree of slip resistance in continually wet areas, whether barefoot or shod. Part of the appeal in using Polysafe Quattro was the contemporary colours available to choose from. The range offers design flexibility, as well as functionality.

The activity room and hair and beauty salon were naturally two areas at high risk of spillage, and therefore slip resistant flooring was again necessary. Whilst the team at Bowfell wanted to create a safe environment, they also wanted it to be an environment that the residents could enjoy. Polysafe Wood FX was installed giving the appearance of a contemporary wooden floor in a slip resistant format.

Creating a space that offers the extensive practical demands of a care facility whilst ensuring a homely atmosphere is maintained throughout could be considered a difficult task, however with Redroom Interiors and Knoll Care Partnerships knowledge and experience combined with Polyflor’s extensive product range we were able to create a beautiful space that was fit for purpose.
