Boston Cycle Shelter provides a high level of security at BMW’s Hams Hall Distribution Centre

Case study

BMW is a market leading automotive brand, with an international reputation for manufacturing high quality luxury vehicles. They first established production of their engines at Hams Hall, Warwickshire in 2001, and the site has remained a key development location since. Following a nationwide investment in BMW’s facilities, a number of new features were added to the site, including a new modern cycle storage area.

The site owners wanted to encourage both staff and visitors to cycle to the site and were looking to install a substantial and secure cycle parking area. It had to provide effective cover throughout the year for a large number of cyclists and their bicycles without requiring regular and costly maintenance.

AUTOPA Limited is a key supplier to the car retail industry, and has manufactured and installed cycle storage and access control products for a number of major automotive retailers across the UK. Manufacturing products at our Rugby works means solutions can be tailored to suit every customer’s need. AUTOPA’s wealth of experience, and the versatility of the VELOPA range meant we were perfectly positioned to provide BMW with the cycle storage solution they were looking for.

Prior to purchase our highly experienced installation team visited Hams Hall to get a full understanding of the site, and the customer’s requirements. Performing a site visit prior to starting work is the best way to guarantee the perfect solution is provided. With a large amount of space available, the AUTOPA installation team determined that one large cycle area would best suit BMW’s needs. Installing two 12m Boston Cycle Shelters would be ideal, offering a large covered space, in a concentrated area.

The Boston Cycle Shelter perfectly pairs a timeless design with a robust build, providing a high level of security. Constructed from galvanised steel, the Boston Cycle Shelter is built to easily withstand the knocks that will inevitably occur on a busy site. Available in standard sizes of up for four metres, BMW took advantage of the optional extension bays which can be added to the shelter, creating an extensive parking area. The curved PETG roof provides effective cover for all bicycles inside the shelter, with the side panels providing further protection from the elements.

The AUTOPA team completed the cycle storage area by installing 30 Sheffield Cycle stands. A staple of the UK high street, this stand has a simple design, which allows the cyclist to secure both the frame and wheel of their bicycle. The Sheffield Cycle Stand is perfect for high density storage, as it can comfortable support two bicycles simultaneously, effectively doubling storage capacity. Working in tandem with the Boston Cycle Shelters, these stands gave BMW storage for up to 60 bicycles on site, creating a large and effective cycle parking area.
