Accreditation success for 25 year roof coating system

Diversified technology company 3M has received a key industry accreditation for its 25-year liquid roofing system.

3M Scotchkote Poly-Tech EC 661 / UV 662 25 Year Premier Plus Flat/ Inverted Roof System has received independent verification of its life to first maintenance of 25 years from the British Board of Agrément (BBA).

The accreditation by the BBA – the Government-recognised body which designates technical approvals for construction products – provides independent assurance that the system will have a service life in excess of 25 years under normal conditions when applied in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification. The accreditation process took into account key performance characteristics including weathertightness, properties in relation to fire, adhesion, resistance to wind uplift and foot traffic, and overall durability.

Designed for application to a wide variety of flat roof substrates including felt, asphalt and concrete 3M Scotchkote Roofing 25 Year Premier Plus Flat / Inverted Roof System comprises three products: 3M Scotchkote Roofing Poly-Tech EC 661, an embedment coat boasting excellent wetting characteristics and strong adhesion to most roof surfaces; 3M Scotchkote Roofing 225gm Premier Plus 055 Reinforcing Mat; and 3M Scotchkote Roofing Poly-Tech UV 662, a highly UV-stable finish coat, providing an exceptional barrier to water ingress, available in a range of colours.

Each of the liquid coatings can be easily applied by brush, roller or spray, offering a non-chalking, totally seamless finish. No hot works permit is required, saving money on insurance premiums and, as the product becomes an integral part of the roof once applied, there is no wind uplift resulting in sheet loss.

Jane Holliday of 3M Corrosion Protection Products explained: “It’s no longer the case that the only option for a failing roof is to replace it entirely. 3M has for many years been at the forefront of innovations in liquid coatings which range from emergency repair products to systems which offer protection for up to 25 years.”

“This accreditation from the BBA provides independent, credible recognition of the performance of our 25-year liquid roof membrane system. Given their ease of application, flexibility, safety and environmental advantages – the existing roof coating can usually stay in place rather than going to landfill - it is our view that liquid roof systems very much represent the future for flat roof protection.”
