A prize-winning sports and leisure development on the Falls Road, in Belfast, features acoustic ceilings from Ecophon that provide ideal conditions for user enjoyment of the facilities.

Designed by practice Kennedy Fitzgerald, the Falls Road Leisure centre is a new-build project including a 25 metre swimming pool, a large fitness and aerobics studio, a large sports hall and multi-purpose rooms for sport and other activities, as well as various public areas. The architect turned to Ecophon to provide relaxed environments free from the reflected noise often associated with these activities.

Ecophon’s Focus D and Focus DG ceilings were specified for the areas fitted with acoustic ceilings. The tiles provide a contemporary appearance with hidden supports and allow easy demountability. The “DG” tiles also provide a “floating” effect with the suspension system 14mm above the visible surface and providing the detailing needed to bring character to suspended ceilings. The fitness suite, which targets users of private clubs, features activities that feature videos and music but the solution avoids reflected noise and has created a feel-good atmosphere.

The building was project managed by Belfast City Council’s Project Management Unit and the acoustic ceilings were fitted by contractor Lynco.
