A warm reception for Kalzip at new office building
Designed by The Austin Company architects, over 5,500 square metres of stucco-embossed Kalzip aluminium standing seam have been specified to create the sweeping, curvaceous roof of the new restaurant and office building at the Macclesfield site of leading pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.
Featuring a distinctive double curve Kalzip roof installed by approved Teamkal members FK Roofing Services (FKRS), the impressive design has been further complemented by a range of Kalzip fabrications including 3 mm PPC straight and curved aluminium flashings. Specified not only for its outstanding design flexibility, Kalzip’s modern appearance was also seen to be ideally suited for use on such a prominent building, which will provide a ‘gateway’ entrance to the site.
The project was constructed over 16 months using a client-led alliance system that required FKRS to work closely alongside the Austin architects and AstraZeneca Engineering, which fulfilled the role of main contractor. The early involvement of the installer in the design process ensured that the architect’s vision was successfully achieved despite the logistical problems of the tight site footprint, set within an operational site. To overcome these challenges, FKRS and Kalzip worked together to agree on a strict procurement period and implement a delivery schedule to minimise disruption to the client.
Covering some 8,350 square metres in total, the new building rises from a single storey at the front to four storeys at the rear and has also been designed to incorporate a variety of facilities for both visitors and staff. Comprising a new site restaurant, which can also be converted into an auditorium for up to 400 people, the building features new state of the art training and meeting rooms suites as well as general office accommodation.
