Why use steel when you can have a greater strength to weight ration, and use a fraction of the material?  Pollywood is a new material where wood fiber and bio-resins are spun into a super-strong hollow pole.

Tubes of Pollywood will be replacing solid wooden electric poles in Northern UK, primarily because they are just as strong and yet have the ability to reduce material usage by 85%. The material is incredibly light, and yet holds large amounts of weight on it; you can even stand on it.
