Speaker:Tony Hunt, Mark Whitby, George Ferguson
To coincide with the Benjamin Baker exhibition, The Engineering Club is hosting a debate featuring the engineers Tony Hunt and Mark Whitby with the Architect George Ferguson. The engineer Benjamin Baker is considered the father of Structural Expressionism as demonstrated through his design of the Forth Bridge, which eschewed the conventional architectural ornamentation of his day. His contemporaries William Morris - “a supreme specimen of ugliness” - and Waterhouse differed on the aesthetic merits of the bridge - a schism which is mirrored today, both in bridge design and the classical architecture vs modernism debate. Sparks may fly!
