Tonight´s double bill heralds the return of one of Ireland´s most celebrated designers, John Tuomey, who will present case studies on The Killiney House and The Sean O´Casey Community Centre and Andrew Clancy, a young architect making his mark who will describe the newly completed House by a Lake, Munster.

Killiney House, Dublin

Located high on a hill in Killiney, with a view southwards towards Dublin Bay and the Sugarloaf Mountain, the site has the character of a secluded hollow with distinctive rocky outcrops of granite. The smooth concrete walls and roof cantilever and curve and cut a swathe into the rocky terrain. The Sean O´Casey Community Centre, Dublin It accommodates a series of resource spaces for the community of the East Wall, including a theatre, day-care, créche, educational and recreational facilities. The external elevations are cast with a corrugated concrete finish.

House by a Lake, Munster

An Irish farmhouse wrapped in a colonnaded concrete structure that mediates between the existing rooms and the lush garden beyond. The internal finishes of wood-panelled walls and fine plastered ceiling are complemented by the black terrazzo floors and exposed concrete colonnade.

Concrete Elegance is hosted by David Bennett and is produced by the Concrete Centre in association with The Building Centre.
