Lancaster University Engineering Building: The new home for the School of Engineering at Lancaster University accommodates a diverse range of workshops, laboratories and academic offices.  

The facade's palette of high quality materials build upon the existing character and integrity of the campus and include Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC), brick and aluminium. These materials wrap both inside and out, changing according to context and orientation. Internally the cast in-situ concrete frame offers the containment and compartmentation of fire, noise and vibration necessary to house the specialist activities of the Engineering School.

Post-tensioned concrete floors with exposed soffits provide thermal mass; a significant part of the building’s sustainability credentials and the BREEAM Outstanding rating. The building has also picked up numerous awards including RIBA Project Architect of the Year Award. The building’s raw aesthetic required careful coordination, which was achieved by a BIM model shared between architect, structural engineer and the M&E subcontractor ahead of site installation.

Burntwood School: Over the last 5 years the Burntwood school campus in Wandsworth, South London has been dramatically transformed. Six new teaching pavilions are set within a new landscape plan, amongst the retained buildings originally designed by Sir Leslie Martin.

Concrete has been used in an innovative manner to deliver robust, attractive buildings without compromising the budget, architectural intent, or brief.

Facades of faceted black and white, load-bearing precast concrete panels form a striking backdrop, developed with careful consideration of details for weathering and integrated solar shading. Internally exposed in-situ concrete provides thermal mass, integral to the low energy strategy and achievement of BREEAM Excellent rating.

The project has been shortlisted for the 2015 Stirling prize.
