Baxi Commercial Division has supplied three Potterton Commercial cast-iron boilers for a refurbishment of the heating system serving Warwick Castle. One of the country’s premier visitor attractions, Warwick Castle dates back to the 13th century, when it was first constructed in stone. Previous owners include Richard Neville, better known as ‘Warwick the Kingmaker’ during the Wars of the Roses and, over the years, Royal visitors have included Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and HM Queen Elizabeth II. Today, the castle is owned by Merlin Entertainments Group.
Within the Castle is the spectacular Great Hall, the castle’s largest room which regularly plays host to events as diverse as medieval banquets, memorable weddings and other functions. Whilst the original heating system would have been a simple central fire, without benefit of chimney, today’s central heating demands require a more sophisticated – not to mention a more energy-efficient - solution! For the past thirty years, heating has been provided by the same Potterton Commercial boilers, so when the time came to replace them, not unnaturally, staff in Warwick Castle’s Estates Department were keen to use the same brand, now part of Baxi Commercial Division.
Installers Batchelor & Hodges selected three Potterton Commercial NXR3 high efficiency boilers and a spokesman commented: “Baxi Commercial Division’s Midlands Area Sales Manager, Mark Field, was most helpful in assisting us to select the boilers, in consultation with Warwick Castle’s Estates Department.” The cast-iron boilers, each with an ouput of 170kW and comprising six sections, are fitted with matched, natural gas-fired burners and serve the existing, vintage cast-iron radiator system as well as convectors. The boilers are installed in the ground floor plantroom and one of the reasons for their selection was their sectional design which overcame access issues. To minimise inconvenience to the Castle’s day to day operation, the boilers had to be delivered to site before 9.00am and installed in a single day.
Potterton Commercial NXR3 boilers are available in outputs from 90kW to 290kW and are suitable for use with match-tested oil, natural gas, LPG and dual fuel burners. With a specially designed heat exchanger which incorporates multiple flue-ways and fins to increase the surface area. The heat exchanger’s large chamber capacity ensures environmentally sound combustion which reduces CO and NOx emissions. The range also features an integrated control panel with volt free contacts for BEMS interface and optional sequence and zone controls. In this installation, the boilers are connected to the site Building Management System which has been upgraded to facilitate control and monitoring of the newly installed equipment.
