Project: United Utilities Project, Ramsgreave

Iron technology leader Saint-Gobain PAM UK, part of leading international materials company Saint-Gobain, has provided its EN545 System XL ductile iron pipes and fittings to a major project for United Utilities at Ramsgreave in Lancashire.

The system - of which 5.7km of pipework and fittings ranging in diameter from 400mm to 500mm has been supplied to contractor Farrans - was selected thanks to its guaranteed long-term performance attributes, especially in relation to corrosion protection. Saint-Gobain PAM’s Natural 400grm zinc aluminium alloy protection is the only system of its type available in the UK which can provide third party accredited assurance of corrosion protection in soils with resistivity as low as 500 ohm cm, with or without a water table.

Saint-Gobain PAM UK’s ability to guarantee corrosion protection has eliminated the need for United Utilities to commission intensive soil surveys to highlight aggressive soil ‘hot spots’, saving further time and money. Meanwhile, the comprehensive performance offered by Natural protection negates the need to identify transition points between medium and low resistivity soils where alternative systems on the market might require a transition from standard to supplementary protection.

Jason Boyd, Project Manager for United Utilities, said: “The installation of EN545 pipes from Saint-Gobain UK helped us by saving time and money on numerous fronts, particularly in the area of soil surveys and identification of transition points between different soil types. We were impressed at the way in which Saint-Gobain PAM UK engaged with us on the project, rather than just supplying materials. They were supportive from start to finish and were a pleasure to deal with.”

Simon Cottingham, Director – Key Account & Major Projects at Saint-Gobain PAM UK said: “Our ability to offer best in class pipe materials and coatings was key to our securing this project due to the particular requirements in the areas of corrosion protection and soil resistivity protection. This pipeline installation will deliver a high performance solution to Unites Utilities, helping supply an essential service to people and businesses in this part of Lancashire.”
