Tobermore’s Modern Manhattan Completes Contemporary Design for Wejchert Architects at Dardistown

Glasnevin Trust has recently developed a new crematorium at Glasnevin cemetery in Cloghran, Dublin, which offers a non-denominational alternative to traditional burials in Ireland. Wejchert Architects was assigned the job of designing the project and Purcell Construction managed the building works on site. The landscaping was of huge importance due to the spiritual nature of the project and with the contemporary style of the new crematorium building, a standard paving product would not suffice. Tobermore helped meet the project requirements with the provision of Manhattan block paving – a plank paving system with a modern appearance.

Dardistown Cemetery was opened in 1990 as a 42 acre cemetery near Dublin airport. In order to retain the attractive features of older cemeteries, Glasnevin has been developed in sections. Wejchert Architects designed the new crematorium building to comprise of two congregation spaces, each with the capacity to hold 150 people, and the crematorium itself along with ancillary functions such as public toilets and storage areas.

A combination of materials were used for the exterior of the build including a zinc clad fan shaped roof, steel columns supporting the overhang of the roof, a weathered limestone wall as part of the crematorium building and high quality aluminium curtain walling on the congregation space. This created a very unique and modern aesthetic and Tobermore’s Manhattan plank paving provided the perfect hard landscaping finish to complete the look.

Manhattan is manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a contemporary appearance similar to natural granite products and the slender product shape creates the impression of space by producing a lengthening or widening effect to the area in which it has been laid. Manhattan was specified in mixed length units and in the striking colour of Silver for this project.

Dardistown cemetery and crematorium was completed in August 2016 and has since been shortlisted in both the Innovation in Project Design and Fitout Supplier of the Year categories at the Fitout Awards 2016.
