The South Marsh Community Hub, Hackney

Project: The South Marsh Community Hub, Hackney

Hackney Marshes is well known as the home of the grass roots of British football and has recently been upgraded with a new sports centre, the South Marsh Community Hub. The facility is an eye-catching new building with a stylish lighting scheme designed by Mindseye featuring RIDI Lighting’s VENICE-A surface mount light channel.

Funded by the London Borough of Hackney and the London Development Agency, the two-storey development is designed to increase visitors to the area and is comprised of a cafe, spectator area and community classrooms on the first floor and a large area of changing rooms on the ground floor. Architect Stanton Williams had a strong vision for the project and were keen to use a lighting design consultant who could enhance the overall effect of the building by integrating with the architecture of the building. Mindseye worked in close collaboration with the architect from an early stage and were able to influence design details for successful integration of the luminaires.

“We are known for our rigorous approach to architectural lighting design," says Admir Jukanovic, Mindseye Associate, "and Stanton Williams recognised that by working with us they would achieve a scheme where the architectural and lighting concepts were fully integrated. The solid concrete and timber ceilings meant no conventional recessed fittings were possible, so trying to achieve a slick looking lighting concept with surface mounted fittings was certainly a challenge. However, once we saw what VENICE from RIDI could do we knew we’d found our product.

The linear format of VENICE is in perfect keeping with the industrial feel of natural concrete finishes and complementary timber ceilings. VENICE is available in surface/suspended-mount versions and recessed formats and is a cost-effective system that is adaptable enough to ensure practical light levels for sports and leisure use as well as educational and teaching visits. The result is a world-class community sports facility, sitting comfortably alongside others that are being built at the Olympic Park.

VENICE is a rectangular light channel comprising of an embedded integrated 7 or 11 core patented wire-way system for easy, fast and flexible connections. Available in clean-cut extruded aluminium VENICE is available in both continuous louvred or opal version and has an option for overlapping or continuous lamps so that the effect of a continuous light can be achieved (as seen at Hackney Marshes).  VENICE also has optional dummy covers to create the effect of dark intersections along the run and also to incorporate sensors. Mirroring the long corridors the continuous lighting runs carry the linear theme through many areas of the building. Venice is supplied in natural anodised aluminium finish or can be painted to any RAL colour on request.
