The Shard, London

Project: The Shard, London

Washrooms inside The Shard – Western Europe’s tallest building – will be as modern and dramatic as the iconic building’s exterior, with the installation of back-painted glass from Solaglas.

The glass solutions company met a complex schedule to manufacture and deliver back-painted glass, which has been used to line the walls of 78 washrooms within the 87 storey central London building.

Solaglas, which is part of the Saint-Gobain group, accommodated the intricate requirements set by fit-out contractor Swift Horsman, whose 18-month design and installation programme is nearing completion.

The Shard is a mixed-use 310 m (1,016 ft) vertical city of high-quality offices, world-renowned restaurants, the 5-star Shangri-La hotel and exclusive residential apartments.  It will also incorporate London’s highest viewing gallery offering 360° views when it opens in May 2012.

Philip Brown, Associate at Swift Horsman, said: “The Shard is being fit-out to the highest standard in terms of product quality and craftsmanship.  Solaglas were an ideal supply chain partner because they provided solutions – they embraced the challenges inherent in a site with difficult access, they responded and adapted well to the changes that a complex build inevitably presents, and they easily accommodated our requirements to have product delivered to our factory in Scotland as well as direct to the central London site.

“It is their flexible way of working and willingness to listen to the needs of their clients that sets Solaglas apart.”

Chris Belcher, Business Manager at Solaglas said: “We are delighted to work on such a landmark project. Back-painted glass is an increasingly popular choice for architects and specifiers looking for a product that creates a striking visual effect and is also functional, durable and easy to clean.

“Innovation, efficiency and a ‘can-do’ approach are qualities that we bring to all our projects. We will continue to invest in our product range and customer service to secure our market leading position.”

Solaglas is a £110m turnover business with 1,200 employees based across 22 separate locations, covering the whole of the UK. The company offers a wide range of high performance, innovative products and services: from glass, sealed units and bolted glazing systems on a supply only basis; to an array of installation services, from emergency replacement glazing to installation contracts of up to £10 million.
