The Royal Palace of Stirling, Scotland

Project: The Royal Palace of Stirling, Scotland

Leading paint manufacturer Johnstone’s has made a significant contribution to the multi-million pound refurbishment of The Royal Palace of Stirling by providing many of the products needed to restore the building to its former glory.

Originally built for King James V and his wife Mary Queen of Scots, evidence suggests that the Palace could have been erected as early as 1538. Working alongside Historic Scotland as part of a £12 million refurbishment programme, Mackay Decorators were tasked with redecorating the King and Queen’s bedchambers as well as the inner and outer halls.

The work carried out by Mackay Decorators was deemed to be of such a high standard that they won the prestigious Johnstone’s Painter of the Year competition.

The work carried out was extremely intricate and took 12 specialist decorators a total of eight months to fully complete. The grand quarters had elaborate panelled ceilings and required the specialist decorators to painstakingly hand paint each section. Wall friezes and large decorative crests were also hand painted by Mackay’s expert team.

With such intricate work being carried out it was vital that the correct specification of products was undertaken and by the time of completion over 400 litres of Johnstone’s products had been applied to the walls of The Royal Palace of Stirling.

To give the Palace a grand, high quality, matt finish, Johnstone’s Flat Matt emulsion was used in a number of tinted colours. Woodwork within the Palace was brought back up to royal standards thanks to the use of Johnstone’s Woodworks Polyurethane Varnish, which was chosen for its ability to highlight the natural grain of the wood and provide a tough, hardwearing finish. Other products that helped return the Palace to its former glory included Johnstone’s Ultra Undercoat and Acrylic Durable Matt.

After walking away with the top prize, John Nevin of Mackay Decorators said: “We were absolutely delighted to have made it to the final of the Johnstone’s Painter of the Year awards, and to then be named the Supreme Winner by over 200 of the industry’s leading decorators is just the icing on the cake! We chose Johnstone’s because it’s a great product with a huge colour choice and it produces fantastic results. The fact that it’s so widely available made it a no brainer.”
