In September 2009 Britain’s earliest railway Roundhouse opened its doors as a vocational campus for Derby College. Built in 1839, the grade II listed roundhouse and its adjacent buildings were restored to provide a stimulating and dynamic teaching environment for over 2,500 students, whilst conserving the original structure.
The 16 sided polygonal roundhouse and the additional 18,000 sq m of learning and teaching space create the sympathetic design integration of old with the new.
Combining the very latest products with the 19th century architecture presents a practical and inspirational college environment. The pioneering transformation involved the installation of nora® rubber floor coverings in the modern division and also in the historical buildings, which were originally used for steam engine repairs.
nora® rubber floor coverings are often preferred for educational facilities worldwide, due to the ability to respond to the demanding nature of the school, university or college environment. The extremely long life and extraordinary wear-resistance facilitates multifunctional areas such as halls, corridors, classrooms, stairwells and other school areas.
The diverse range of design options and product charactaristics offered by both norament® and noraplan® products were ideal for installation in the college.
On the stairs, norament® 925 grano stairtreads were installed with double grey highlight strips. All of the nora® floor coverings installed in The Roundhouse are easily and economically cleaned without expensive cleaning methods or coatings thanks to the extremely dense surface of noraplan® and norament®. The ease of cleaning coupled with the durability of the product ensure that the life cycle cost of nora® is significantly lower than many alternative floorcoverings, making nora® the ideal
choice for many educational installations.
nora® floor coverings also provide excellent footfall sound optimisation which are often required by historical school buildings in corridors, classrooms and stairwell with sound insulation of up to 20db. In addition, throughout entrance areas, hallways, stairwells and escape routes, the excellent fire-protection properties, slip resistance and high walking comfort of nora® helps to ensure that students, teachers and other staff are given a safe and ergonomic route of passage in and around the building.
Not only is nora® the epitome of floor coverings of the highest quality, the floorcoverings do not contain plasticizers, halogenated substances or organic flame retardants. Minerals, from natural deposits and environmentally compatible colour pigments help to construct the ingredients of the rubber floor covering. The noraplan® 913 floorcovering is certified according to BRE certification system for environmental profiles of construction products and has received an A rating.
This outstanding project has re-invigorated Derby College and has ensured that a fascinating historical building is brought into the modern era with nora® rubber floorings.
