Challenge

Southampton Airport is an international airport serving over 40 destinations. As the 18th busiest UK airport, it handled over 1.7 million passengers in 2013.

Safety and security are paramount at any airport and emergency procedures and facilities need to be flawless and well maintained.

Improvements were required to the emergency staircases in the airport’s multi-story car park. Previously, only a yellow strip was painted on the edge of the concrete steps across the 5 stairways, which meant the potential slip hazard was great.

Solution

To comply with health and safety regulations, the in-house Facilities Management Team at the Airport specified the double channel, ramp back stair nosing SR225R in yellow to go in all 5 emergency staircases.

The yellow colour provides a highly visible step edge along with the slip resistance provided by 2 strips of tread material. Based on tests carried out by Grip Potential Ltd adhering to the UKSRG, HSE and CIRIA guidelines on pedestrian slip risk assessment, all Quantum Flooring treads exceed the minimum requirement as per BS8300:2009 and HSE Publication.

Quantum’s free measuring service, QSMS, was used, meaning quick and accurate measurements were taken. The nosings were fitted using Flexyfix to help speed up the installation helping to cause the least disruption possible and maintaining the safety of airport car park.
