Haddonstone, the UK’s leading manufacturer of landscape ornaments and architectural cast stone, was approached by Scarborough Borough Council to replace existing stonework which was badly eroding.
Scarborough Spa is a Grade II* listed complex which is owned and by the Borough Council. Built in the 19th century, it contains a grand hall, theatre and an ‘Ocean Room’ for dances, conferences and other events.
Haddonstone was chosen as a suitable material for this project as dry cast stone was used to refurbish another part of the building over 25 years ago and has been performing well. The company was also able to show the results of a rigorous series of assessments conducted by the renowned BRE laboratories, showing how the Haddonstone material passed, with flying colours, strenuous Salt Crystallisation and Water Absorption tests – essential is the stonework was to withstand the rigours of the North Sea.
As a result of the project, Haddonstone was presented with the prestigious Gold Award (Building Materials) for Environmental Practices and Sustainable Development. The International Green Apple Awards are presented by the Green Organisation to those who set the standard in the environmental practice and sustainable development.
Haddonstone has a dedicated 12-strong contracts staff, and custom designs in addition to the extensive standard range are a specialty.
