The Royal Horticultural Society’s Glasshouse Nurseries in Wisley, UK, needed to find a heavy duty slip resistant mat to replace a rubber one. This was because the existing mat had become slippery due to the heat, humidity and puddles of standing water caused by the large quantity of water needed for nurturing the tropical plants for its famous Glasshouse. The Solution
Plastex worked closely with the Glasshouse Manager Nick Morgan trialling several different mats to see which was the most effective at solving the safety problem in such a unique application.
As a result, Vynagrip was proved to be the best solution. The mat’s high profile section enables it to straddle standing water while its aggressive and deep etched surface is very effective at being slip resistant even when soaking wet. This is because the open grid construction encourages quick dissipation and dispersal of water through the surface which is also resistant to mould, algae, oils and other chemicals. The addition of a gently angled ramp welded to the edges of the mat facilitates the passage of plant trolleys and wheeled equipment.
Nick Morgan comments, “We are really pleased with the matting and the way it has solved our problem. The previous mat was no longer safe for nursery staff and we had to stop the guided tours as it was a danger for the public. This new matting from Plastic Extruders has changed all that. Regardless of how wet it gets, the staff are not slipping and we’re delighted that we have been able to resume the guided tours.“
