Perrott Hill School, Somerset

Project: Perrott Hill School, Somerset

During the summer of 2011, Perrott Hill in Somerset decided that they required a new hockey surface at their thriving country Preparatory School. Situated in beautiful grounds with extremely dedicated staff, Perrott Hill ensures that the highest standards of academic and pastoral care are provided for each and every pupil. They pride themselves on the fact that child is given the opportunity to develop and thrive as an individual and offer a wide range of facilities.

When looking to update their sports facilities the school contacted Verde Recreo; specialist sports pitch contractors based near Bath. Specialising in artificial grass pitch design, artificial grass pitch construction and artificial grass pitch maintenance, like Playrite have a passion for sport and are dedicated to developing the very best sports facilities wherever they're needed. A meeting was held with the school to discuss their needs and talk them through the wide range of surfacing options.

Their main requirement was for a dedicated hockey surface and, as hockey is very dependent on its surface, for a true and accurate ball roll, players find that a short pile tufted product that offers low sand content, or a needlepunch surface is the most suitable for this particular sport. The performance of the hockey pitch is of course, reliant on the surface interacting with the hockey ball and as a result often relies on the performance of the actual product and not the infill for its playing characteristics.

Due to the fact that hockey was the primary sport to be played on this particular surface, (with only some occasional tennis usage) it was decided that Playrite’s Tournament 18 would be the ideal choice. Tournament 18 is a sand dressed, tufted knit de knit polypropylene pile yarn product that provides an excellent playing surface for sports such as hockey as well as being suitable for multi sport use. With excellent durability and hardwearing properties, Tournament 18 is available with inlaid lines to mark out a range of different sports and meets EN15330 Part 1 as well as the FIH accreditation.

Neil Mapletoft, Bursar at Perrott Hill explained how:

“The Tournament 18 surface was just what our school was looking for. Hockey is the main sport that is played on the pitch so we wanted a dedicated grass-like surface, but we didn’t want to limit the possibility of playing other sports on the pitch. Overall we are very happy with surface manufactured by Playrite and the work from Verde Recreo and we are likely to ask them to do more work for us in the future.”
