Cempanel, the cement particle board from Cembrit, demonstrates its versatility and excellent performance on a high profile school academy building project.
The £22m Ormiston Horizon Academy is located in Stoke-On-Trent and is built to the latest environmental building standards. 10,000m² of Cempanel have been installed by cladding contractor, ISEC Interior Systems as a cost effective interior sheath and carrier board for insulated render/rainscreen on the main Academy building.
Formerly James Brindley Science College, the new Academy opened in September 2013. Designed and built by Balfour Beatty, the new site features four wings arranged around a central hub which contains a learning resource centre; dance, performance and activity studios; as well as an assembly and dining hall. Entirely rebuilt under the BSF (Building Schools for the Future) programme, the school has a capacity of 1050 pupils. ISEC Interior Systems is an education sector specialist with a large portfolio of projects in the Staffordshire region.
Cempanel CP boards are available in 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and 16mm thicknesses. The boards fitted at Ormiston Horizon Academy were 10mm which makes them robust, hard-wearing and well suited for use as an internal skin for the new academy building. The combination of wood particles and cement creates a board that is stronger and lighter than plasterboard and is less likely to be damaged on site. The cement particles make it easy to cut and install. Its insulation properties helped to achieve the energy efficiency and construction goals for this project.
Cempanel can also be used as a load bearing board and provides sound insulation, impact resistance and moisture resistance. For internal use it can be used as a high-impact lining board and also doubles as a good alternative to chipboard or plywood. It is Class 0 fire rated, and can be decorated on or off site. Available as a standard 2400 x 1200 board, it can be supplied in special sizes to order.
