Longbenton Primary School, Newcastle upon Tyne

Project: Longbenton Primary School, Newcastle upon Tyne

Longbenton Primary School, a new multi-faith youth educational facility in Newcastle upon Tyne, has brought the children from St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic and St. Bartholomew’s Church of England Primary School together under one roof.

Designed by North Tyneside Council, this project has been in fruition since May 2010. The council initially got involved to support St. Stephen’s and St. Bartholomew’s in their bid to create a state- of-the-art joint schools complex. North Tyneside Council allocated more than £3.4 million from its Capital Programme for the scheme, to complement a £3.2 million contribution from the diocesan authorities.

The project has been a great success with Kier Construction commencing construction work in July 2013 which was successfully completed in time for the new school term in September 2014. Head teacher at St Stephen’s, Stephen Fallon, has proudly noted that the campus will be the first of its kind anywhere in the North East. “The project brings both schools more in line with 21st Century education...Both the school’s churches are firmly behind the move." The congregating of the two school bodies and two churches has been such a positive process that a celebratory function was organised to mark the completion of the project and the beginning of a new multi-cultural future for the children of Longbenton.

Joyce Construction Civil Ltd acted as sub-contractor on this project and laid the beautiful paving supplied by Tobermore. Established in 1942, Tobermore supply a broad ranging collection of block paving, paving flags, kerbing and walling products to the commercial and private markets throughout the UK and Ireland.

Tobermore are delighted to have been involved in such an inspiring development. The ultra-modern and joyful landscape was created with Tobermore's fabulous Fusion block paving in Graphite, Russett, and Azure Blue. The infusion of the bright product colours chosen for the grounds at Longbenton Primary School was the ideal choice for creating a child-friendly environment, encouraging learning and play.
