Made-to-order timber sash windows by Lomax + Wood have been architecturally specified for a terraced Victorian property refurbishment in the much sought after residential area of Canton in Cardiff, close to shops, arts and leisure amenities.
Built during Queen Victoria’s reign (1837 to 1901) amidst Cardiff’s rapid expansion the property has many high quality architectural features and detailing reminiscent of the era including double bay windows, front gables, stained or decorative glass in and over doors and window openings, timber sliding sash windows, partly glazed entrance doors and elegant railings.
Slender non-bar, sash windows with sash horns, from the Kensington & Chelsea range are set into the original stone surroundings, integrating perfectly with the elegant grey paint finish and blending with the exterior stone cladding. A dual-colour finish has been used in RAL 7011 with natural stain to the interior finish adding light and a feeling of spaciousness to these naturally high-ceilinged rooms.
“This area of Cardiff in Wales has special character,” says Chris Wood, managing director, Lomax + Wood, “which has particularly benefited from sympathetic development and alterations. The Kensington & Chelsea windows have contributed to this considerate project and the homeowner, has retained the attractive appearance while improving the thermal and acoustic performance of the property. The renovation has also shown how replacement, high performance timber sash windows completely enhance a traditional property, in contrast to some neighbouring homes where design has been compromised with the use of PVC-U.”
These made-to-order timber double glazed, sliding sash windows are available and operated either by spring balance or traditional weights, heavy duty brass ball bearing pulley wheels and pre-stretched nylon cords. Kensington & Chelsea double glazed windows provide excellent levels of thermal performance with a low U-value which exceeds the current requirements of Part L Building Regulations. This low U-value will help to ensure warmth and comfort for property owners, reduced energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.
The Lomax + Wood range offers beautiful, coordinating flush casement windows; elegant glazed or solid entrance doors in a variety of designs; French doorsets, single and bi-folding doors. Products are factory finished and include only traditional flush joints, rather than Swedish joints which are prevalent in mass produced modern windows and are considered detrimental to authentic period aesthetics. Products are internally glazed for enhanced security and improved visual impact. A single glazed conservation box sash window is also available for sensitive replacement projects.
Ideal for both new build and heritage work, Lomax + Wood’s Kensington & Chelsea products are manufactured from sustainably sourced FSC® Chain of Custody accredited timber, in accordance with BM TRADA certification. Only high quality clear grade timber is used in the manufacturing process which is engineered for maximum strength and stability. Products are delivered to site and factory-finished with three coats of highly durable micro-porous paint as standard, which is available in white and a choice of fashionable heritage colours, as well as stain.
Acoustic data for Lomax + Wood windows is also now available as tested by BM TRADA. With the acoustic upgrade option the Kensington & Chelsea traditionally designed timber flush casement achieves a market-leading 42db and the box sash 38db. Lomax + Wood also offer customers a bespoke test service to help achieve exceptional acoustic targets for made-to-order timber windows and doors.
