Skanska Healthcare AB has awarded the contract to Construction Specialties (UK) Ltd for supply and installation of a wall protection package at the New Karolinska Solna (NKS) Hospital in Sweden.
This new, 630 bed, state-of-the-art hospital under construction in the Solna district of Stockholm, Sweden, is the biggest project ever undertaken by both Stockholm County Council and Skanska, and the first PPP (Public Private Partnership) hospital project being delivered in Sweden.
Designed with patients in mind, and aiming to deliver top quality care services in most efficient way in an environment that will facilitate the healing process, NKS will provide highly specialised healthcare, alongside research and training.
In 2017, the finished hospital will be classified ‘gold’ according to the Swedish ‘Environmental Building’ classification system, and is aiming for the LEED ‘gold’ accreditation. The design and contracting teams are striving to achieve these ambitious environmental objectives through energy efficiency and careful selection of materials used in the construction process, to ensure their long life cycle, recyclability and low impact on the environment.
C/S UK has worked closely with White Tengbom Team Architects and the Skanska team to design a wall protection scheme which will offer optimum protection level and functionality, whilst enhancing the interior design.
Acrovyn 4000, the material chosen for the project, is a PVC-free wall protection with a proven track record. Fully recyclable, and free from potentially harmful chemicals such as PBTs (Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxins), PBA (Bisphenol A) and halogenated fire-retardants, Acrovyn 4000 fits well with the project’s high environmental standards.
The wall protection scheme used for the hospital includes a combination of textured Acrovyn 4000 Sheet applied to dado height in circulation corridors, utility rooms and day wards, and smooth Sheet fitted behind the sinks in bedrooms and day wards. External corners will be protected with a selection of corner guards; Acrovyn 4000 SSM20 has been chosen for the circulation routes, stainless steel guards for the glazed atrium, and severe duty EPDM rubber corner guards for basement areas.
The main colour of wall protection used throughout the hospital is an unobtrusive white, and eleven bespoke colours matched to NCS colours for the project are going to be used in recess bays.
Wendy Duckham, Managing Director at C/S UK, said: ‘There were a number of factors which contributed to our success in winning this project. A tried and tested product which fitted the environmental and performance brief was definitely one of them, as was C/S’s global presence, and ability to service and support projects internationally. We also have a track record of working successfully with Skanska on other large healthcare projects, most recently the Royal London and St Bartholomew Hospital Redevelopment in London.’
The installation of Acrovyn 4000 at the New Karolinska Solna Hospital begins in March 2014, and will be delivered by the company’s wholly owned installation division, Conspec Contracts Ltd.
