HMP Wakefield

Project: HMP Wakefield

Iron technology leader Saint-Gobain PAM UK, part of leading international materials company Saint-Gobain, has won a major new contract to supply its Ensign Drain system for an extensive project in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Initially built in 1594, HMP in Wakefield is the largest maximum security prison in the UK and Western Europe with an operational capacity of approximately 750 inmates. The project is a new build extension utilising a below ground Ensign drainage system.

Richard Smith, technical sales manager at Saint-Gobain PAM UK, commented: “The Ensign Drain system was particularly specified for its robustness and longevity. The proven, reliable, mechanically jointed system is often first choice for under building drainage, and cast iron ensures a fit and forget solution. The system meets the full requirements of current EU standards and is kitemarked to the latest product standard BS EN 877.”

The Ensign Drain system is being supplied by Burdens in Leeds and installed by contractor Fisher Construction in Wakefield, while the main contractor for the project is Shepherd Construction in Manchester.
