The Post Office has relocated its head office to Finsbury Dials in London with the help of architects HLW International. Their brief was to design open plan offices on three floors with a flexible events area and café on the ground floor. Heradesign ceilings in bold colours were installed in the two main entrance areas which lead to striking touchdown zones that wrap around the main atrium.
The Post Office are thrilled with their office and explain why: “The touchdown zones are the vibrant heart of the office and link visually to the operational areas. The space is incredibly dynamic and the Heradesign ceilings help guide people through the building. The blocks of colour in the zones give these areas an identity.”
Senior Designer Mustafa Afsaroglu of HLW International explains what attracted him to Heradesign: “I liked the depth in texture of the panels – it added another layer to the ceiling. Acoustic control in the open area was key and Heradesign provides the necessary Class A sound absorption.”
At the Post Office HQ, Heradesign panels were colour matched to the floor and wall colours to create spaces that have a sense of vitality and enclosure about them. Heradesign can be specified in a wide variety of colours including pastels, solid and metallic colours using popular colour systems such as RAL, NCS and StoColor. Heradesign is manufactured from wood-wool which gives it an attractive, naturally textured surface. The panels are available in a choice of fibres ranging from 1-3mm thick, and in a number of different sizes and edge details.
One of the criteria for the project was to achieve SKA rating. SKA rating is an environmental assessment method, benchmark and standard for non-domestic fit outs - recently featured in the UK Government's Low Carbon Action Plan. Mustafa Afsaroglu explains why it is was important for the new HQ: “Sustainability was one of the big aspects of the process. Our aim was to achieve SKA Gold. Knauf AMF was particularly helpful in proving that the product was SKA compliant.”
The environmental credentials of Heradesign helped support the application for SKA rating. The wood-wool is sourced from sustainable forests which are FSC and PEFC certified. Heradesign panels come with a 15 year guarantee and can last for more than 80 years. When the time comes, they can be recycled or disposed of without any detrimental impact on the environment. Heradesign’s outstanding sound absorption values can reach up to αѡ=1.0, resulting in a comfortable working environment where staff can concentrate without being disturbed by background noise.
To achieve the almost continuous appearance of the ceiling, Heradesign panels were installed using a concealed grid system. The ceiling panels are lightweight and easy to fit into place.
