Project: Hanover House, Bradford

The surge in popularity of zinc roofing and cladding systems owes much to the design scope that the metal provides. Grade II listed Hanover House, a former Victorian textile mill in the 'Little Germany' area of central Bradford, shows how VMZINC’s standing seam system in ANTHRA-ZINC has been used to complement the Yorkshire stone and prevailing local use of slate. Kraus Schönberg Architects sophisticated design for the Garbe Group involved complete refurbishment and the addition of a roof extension. However, because of the building’s listing, the 1300m2 zinc and engineered timber roof was designed to be self-supporting. A further requirement of the conversion to high specification apartments was to use a sustainable, high performance material with proven colour retention. The spatial concept shows how zinc has been used to suit the local vernacular, blending a contemporary material with traditional elements of design. The use of zinc in complex folds has led to the project becoming winner of the 4th Archizinc Trophy.
