Clay block walling system specified for Assisted Living project

Work has commenced on a 5,316m2 Assisted Living project by McCarthy and Stone in Solihull, which has specified the Porotherm clay block walling system, three brick styles and the 20/20 roof tile from leading supplier of wall, roof and landscaping innovations, Wienerberger.

The development will utilise Wienerberger’s clay block walling system, Porotherm, which provides a range of benefits including excellent thermal efficiency and speed of use due to its unique interlocking design, ruling out the need for mortar in the vertical joints – saving the company both time and money.

The exterior brickwork will use Wienerberger’s New Red Multi Gilt, a traditional red brick that has a range of deep red tones with occasional black patches.

Also specified were the Sunset Red and Cinnabar Red bricks, both of which present a more mottled façade.

Finally, the roof will boast the Sandtoft 20/20 roof tile, which were selected as it can be used for pitches down to 15° and boasts single lap design for quick installation.

Once complete, the development, which is being built by the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, McCarthy and Stone, will comprise 51 apartments alongside staff sleeping quarters, a function room and a full commercial kitchen

Keith Barker, Commercial Director at Wienerberger, commented:

"McCarthy and Stone has been very impressed by the products we have provided and the advantages they have brought to the project. Together the products demonstrate how the Wienerberger building envelope can bring multiple benefits when employed within a single project.

A standard McCarthy and Stone development is given a window of 18 months for completion, however Porotherm has been able to reduce this to just 56 weeks – a time-saving of between three and six months, which is great news for both McCarthy and Stone and those looking to live on the new development.

The choice of bricks and the 20/20 tiles has resulted in a fully clay envelope being specified – clay building materials are natural, versatile and durable, making them a sound choice for any developer. A modern building must comply with numerous demands, and by carefully selecting the raw materials and using state of the art production facilities, Wienerberger is able to guarantee that our clay products will last for generations."
