The new extension at Centre of Applied Science for Health (CASH) building at the Institute of Technology TALLAGHT in Co. Dublin features a stunning 10m high two storey meeting pod within its atrium entrance area.
Designed by Taylor Architects of Castlebar, the egg shaped, poplar clad pod has been constructed as a meeting and seminar room accessed from the first floor of the building.
Standing on five structural steel columns, it is essentially independent from the rest of the building so has its own ventilation system to ensure ideal comfort conditions for those working inside.
International engineers PM Group were the building services consultants on the project and specified a REHAU AWADUKT Thermo ground – air heat exchanger system to provide a renewable managed air supply into the pod.
Specialist contractors and REHAU Authorised Partners White Underfloor Heating installed a 10m x 30m grid of REHAU AWADUKT Thermo pipework 1.5m below ground adjacent to the east side of the CASH building which is drawing pre-conditioned air into the pod when required.
The grid consists of 200mm dia AWADUKT collector pipes, 500mm dia distribution pipe, two condensate collection chambers and a 500mm dia inlet tower.
At the 1.5m pipework depth, the temperature of the ground remains at between 8º and 12ºC all year round with the effect that, as air is drawn through the optimised polypropylene, it is pre-cooled or pre-warmed depending on the season. In winter, for example, the incoming air can be pre-warmed by as much as 9ºC while in summer, it can be pre-cooled by up to 14ºC before it is delivered into the pod.
A patented antimicrobial silver lining on the inside of the pipe prevents microbial growth which could otherwise occur in the warm, damp environment.
REHAU’s Dublin sales office supported the design team at PM Group with the unusual system design and with calculations for the air flow rates required for the pod.
The REHAU AWADUKT Thermo system is being specified extensively throughout Ireland, and was recently installed in the new BREEAM excellent rated Giant’s Causeway visitor centre
